I think literature should be taught in schools. There are three reason to think so: for knowledge, ethic and ability to think.
Literally, literature is directly connected literacy. Literature offers a large amount of knowledge. When you read some texts, you can learn some new words and concepts.
Secondary, literature tells us what is right or wrong, in short, ethic. Human may face very difficult questions on the way of life. e.g. economy development V.S. environmental protection. Literature may offer some standards when we meet them.
Furthermore, literature gives us opportunity to think difficult questions deeply.
However, let me tell you what I concern --- the way of teaching literature in schools.
Generally, after reading novels or essays, students will be asked what they think, or how do they think? But Teachers in Japan were not interested in students’ comments. They were likely concern whether the students’ comments towards the goal the government set. That must change. I admit Japanese is not good at organizing a debate, however, these attitudes should take the experience where students can think on their own, accept other point of view, and expand their ability thorough out the debate.
I don’t know current educational circumstances, but the government does not seem to be aggressive to encourage students to have wider view.
If that can change, the efficiency of literature in schools would be significantly improved.
